The varsity head field hockey coach at Madison High School could be forced out of her position — and past and current players and supporters are rallying for her to keep coaching a winning team.

Head Coach Ann Marie Davies said before a packed Board of Education meeting Thursday, April 25, that her contract as coach wasn’t being renewed. Although she is still employed by the school district, her position has been posted on the district’s website for applicants, Davies added.

Florham Park officials frustrated with ‘misleading’ energy aggregation program
The Florham Park Eagle, February 22, 2019

What is meant to be a program to help residents save money on electric bills has instead left borough officials frustrated about its implementation.

Borough Council members grilled a representative from Concord Engineering about the program at its meeting Thursday, Feb. 21.

Since 2017, Florham Park residents can participate in an energy aggregation program through the Morris Area Energy Cooperative to save money on their electric bills. There is a periodic renewal in participation and the next round of the program will start next month and run for 19 months.

The program, overseen by the state’s Board of Public Utilities, was implemented in the borough by an ordinance adopted in February 2017.

Editorial: Protect children in the Catholic church
The Florham Park Eagle, February 20, 2019

The Roman Catholic Church is reckoning with allegations of sexual abuse.

Last summer, a special grand jury report in Pennsylvania found more than 1,000 people were sexually abused by Catholic priests in that state over a 70-year period. The report also alleged a cover-up by church leaders.

On the heels of the Pennsylvania report, N.J. State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal convened a task force to look into allegations of sexual abuse by members of the clergy in the various Catholic dioceses of New Jersey. The task force also is directed to investigate whether any diocese has covered up abuse reports. As the investigation continues into allegations of sexual abuse in Catholic churches in New Jersey, the public learned the names of individuals credibly accused of sexually abusing minors.

Florham Park artist looks at the world differently through photography, mixed media, jewelry
The Florham Park Eagle, February 13, 2019

When resident Jennifer Hughes wants to take a photo of someone, she doesn’t just want to capture someone smiling.

“I want to give people an idea of who they really are, project their story,” she remarked.

Hughes, of Ridgedale Avenue, is an artist specializing in photography and mixed media, specifically alcohol ink and acrylics. Instead of painting with acrylics, she pours the material and rolls it on a canvas. The alcohol ink is spread on paper using a hairdryer.

Rodin sculpture uncovered in Madison town hall
The Madison Eagle, Oct. 11, 2017

It isn’t every town hall that can claim a Rodin in its council chambers.

Madison can, and what’s more the near-priceless sculpture had been watching the borough do its business unnoticed from its corner in the back of the room for nearly 80 years before a sharp-eyed young curator uncovered its roots.

The large marble bust of Napoleon Bonaparte by the famed French sculptor Auguste Rodin was long known to be “lost” to the arts community — until the efforts of Mallory Mortillaro, the curator of collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation, confirmed the sculpture sitting on a pedestal in a corner of the chambers was, in fact, the “lost” Rodin sculpture in 2015.

Rare Bible uncovered at Drew University in Madison

The Madison Eagle,  Dec. 10, 2015

When Drew University graduate student and library worker Brian Shetler went to search for books to show an undergraduate history class on Oct. 28, he never imagined that he would discover an uncatalogued treasure.

“This particular class was focused on 16th and 17th century England and so we were trying to find material that was of that time period,” said Shetler, originally from Pennington. “I pulled about 40 books or so onto a cart and brought them down, and one of them that I came across was the Bible itself — and on the box that it was in it just said ‘Bible 1611 R. Barker’.’”
